John Barbour founded the company in South Shields, England, in 1894 to outfit sailors and labourers in oilskin. It is great at waxed cotton that actually keeps weather out. The Bedale and Beaufort jackets became the British countryside uniform, then a fashion one. Fun fact: Barbour still offers a factory re-wax service, which is why a 30-year-old jacket can look newly proofed.
