Issey Miyake founded his label in Tokyo in 1970 and spent a career asking what cloth can do. Pleats Please (1993) is the big democratic idea—wrinkle-proof pleats a person can pack. Fun fact: the heat-press pleat process means a dress can collapse into a rectangle and bloom again.
