Tunisian-born Azzedine Alaïa opened his Paris house after years as a secret couturier to the elite. He is great because he cut on the body like a sculptor. The bandage dress and second-skin knitwear of the 1980s made supermodels look carved. Fun fact: Alaïa famously skipped the official fashion-week calendar and still dressed Greta Garbo, Grace Jones and Naomi Campbell.
