Versace

Gianni Versace opened in Milan in 1978 and treated glamour as armor. The 1994 safety-pin dress is pop history; Medusa and baroque prints did the rest. It is great at turning the volume knob all the way on so a dress photographs from across a room. Fun fact: the house never pretended to be quiet, which is why it still works on a red carpet.
