The Birkenstock family has made footbeds in Germany since the late 18th century; the modern cork sandal took off in the 20th. It is great because the last is an orthopedic idea, not a fashion one. The Madrid and Arizona are the icons; the Boston clog became the 2020s fashion chapter. Fun fact: Birkenstock was counterculture footwear long before it was a LVMH-adjacent luxury object.
