Acne Studios

Jonny Johansson founded Acne Studios in Stockholm in 1996; the first hit was a pair of raw jeans with a red stitch. It is great at turning Scandinavian minimalism slightly off-kilter—sharp tailoring, odd proportions, cult denim. Fun fact: ACNE first stood for “Ambition to Create Novel Expressions,” and the jeans-with-a-magazine strategy made it a fashion publisher as much as a clothing brand.
